The Airdrie Animal Health Centre is committed to maintaining your cat’s health. Vaccinating your cat is an essential aspect of providing preventative health care and keeping them in top form. Regular vaccinations help prime your cat’s immune system to build up an effective response to diseases, thereby mitigating or preventing infection.
Does my indoor cat need to be vaccinated?
The vaccines that your cat needs will depend on their lifestyle. We recommend all cats receive the FVRCP core vaccine- a vaccine that protects against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus and Feline Panleukopenia. We also suggest that all feline friends receive the Feline Rabies vaccination. The other vaccine we offer, the Feline Leukemia vaccine, may only be necessary if your cat is spending time outdoors or if you are introducing a new cat into your household, as it is only spread from feline to feline, within their saliva.
How often does my adult cat need to be vaccinated?
At the Airdrie Animal Health Centre, we recommend your feline friend is vaccinated yearly when they come in for their annual preventative health exam. In adult cats, we offer an annual FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus and Feline Panleukopenia) core vaccine as well as an annual Feline Leukemia vaccine for outdoor cats. The rabies vaccine that we offer for mature cats only has to be given once every three years. Once vaccinated with our clinic, your pet will be updated in our system, automatically reminding you when your cat is due for vaccines making it easier for you to keep track of your pet’s preventative health care.
Are there any risk associated with cat vaccines?
The vaccines administered to cats are safe vaccines. The only concerns that may arise when vaccinating a cat would be allergic reactions to the vaccine and these types of reactions are rare and usually mild. The beneficial preventative immunity that develops from inoculating your cat with vaccines grossly outweighs any risk of having a vaccine reaction.
